PLŪKT: A Different Kind of Black Tea from Latvia

PLŪKT Nordic Black fireweed herbal tea packaging from Latvia

BREWRITUAL · MEET THE MAKER · MAKER NOTE NO.01

From the wild meadows of Latvia, PLŪKT turns fermented fireweed leaves into a dark, aromatic and naturally caffeine-free infusion.

Some products explain themselves immediately. Others ask us to stop, look again and understand what sits behind the packaging.

PLŪKT Nordic Black belongs to the second group.

In the cup, it has some of the familiarity of black tea: a clear, dark-gold colour, gentle bitterness and a lingering sweetness. But it is not made from a conventional tea leaf. Its only ingredient is fermented fireweed — a plant gathered from the wild meadows and forests of Northern Europe.

That small difference changes the whole story.

A tea house shaped by place

PLŪKT is based in Prauliena, in Latvia’s Madona region. Its tea house sits among the meadows and forests that provide both the ingredients and the wider point of view behind the brand.

The company is led by co-founders Māra Lieplapa and Līga Lieplapa. Māra oversees the business and its development, while Līga is the tea master, bringing long experience in herbs, environmental science, nature conservation and tea production.

Even the name is connected to the process: plūkt means “to pluck” in Latvian — a direct reference to gathering plants by hand.

Rather than attempting to recreate tea traditions from somewhere else, PLŪKT explores what a distinctly Northern European tea culture might look and taste like.

From fireweed to Nordic Black

Nordic Black is made with one ingredient: fermented fireweed leaves.

PLŪKT slowly ferments the leaves at approximately 50°C for up to a week. The leaves are then formed so that they can open as the tea steeps, producing a deeper and more structured infusion than many people expect from a botanical tea.

The result is naturally caffeine-free. It is important to distinguish this from decaffeinated black tea: caffeine has not been removed from the finished product. The infusion simply begins with fireweed rather than a caffeinated tea leaf.

The character is dark, clear, aromatic and bittersweet, with enough depth to make it feel appropriate for the morning or an early-afternoon pause.

It does not taste exactly like a traditional breakfast tea, nor does it need to. Nordic Black occupies its own space between a familiar dark cup and a single-ingredient herbal infusion.

Why BrewRitual chose it

At BrewRitual, we look for products with a clear reason to be here: an identifiable maker, a considered process, a meaningful origin and a useful place within an everyday ritual.

Nordic Black answers each of those questions.

It offers a caffeine-free cup without becoming delicate or anonymous. Its flavour has enough bitterness and structure to be interesting, while its single ingredient keeps the product understandable.

It is also presented in 25 plant-fibre pyramid tea bags and is certified organic and vegan. The format is practical for daily brewing, while the product itself still carries a strong sense of place and method.

Most importantly, it encourages curiosity. It asks us to reconsider what “black tea” can mean when the starting point is not a distant plantation, but a wild plant growing in the Latvian landscape.

How to brew Nordic Black

For a hot infusion, begin by warming the cup with a little hot water.

Add one tea bag and pour over water close to boiling. Allow it to steep for five to seven minutes. The longer infusion helps develop the darker colour and bittersweet character.

Taste it without milk or sweetener first. This makes it easier to notice the aromatic, slightly earthy qualities of the fireweed.

Nordic Black can also be prepared cold: use one bag for approximately 500ml of cold still or sparkling water and infuse for eight to ten minutes.

A Latvian thread

This Maker Note continues a Latvian thread already present in the BrewRitual Journal.

Our earlier story about maizes zupa looked at how rye bread can become a dessert and how an everyday ingredient can carry memory, geography and tradition.

PLŪKT offers another expression of the same idea.

A plant from a familiar landscape is gathered, studied and transformed into something contemporary — without removing the connection to where it came from.

That is the kind of product we want the Journal to help explain. Not only what something is, but why its origin, method and maker are worth noticing.

Brew. Pause. Notice.
