BREWRITUAL · COFFEE NOTES · LONDON ROASTERS

Long before Volcano Coffee Works became a familiar London roasting name, there was a small coffee cart. Behind it stood a cook who believed a cup of coffee deserved the same attention as anything coming out of a good kitchen.

Imagine stopping on your way to work in South London. A small Italian Piaggio Ape is parked near Rosendale Road in West Dulwich. Someone is pulling espresso, the air smells of ground beans, and for a minute the morning rush has a reason to slow down.

That cart belongs to the early story of Volcano Coffee Works. Its founder, Kurt Stewart, came from New Zealand and a career in kitchens. He wanted to make good coffee easier to find. The cart helped grow a London roasting business, but that straightforward idea has stayed with it.

Think like a cook, roast like a roaster

Volcano talks about flavour in a way we recognise from the kitchen. A blend can be balanced, layered and adjusted, much like a dish. Chocolate, stone fruit, caramel and citrus are not extra ingredients tipped into the beans: they are familiar words that help explain what you might notice in the finished cup.

You do not need to memorise a tasting wheel to enjoy a coffee. Start with the flavours you already like, make a cup using the equipment you have, and see what stands out.

Today Volcano roasts in South London and speaks about buying coffee with care, working with producers and making specialty coffee more approachable. That combination of craft and everyday usefulness caught our attention at BrewRitual.

One small tasting experiment

Choose the same mug and brewer for two different coffees. Taste each before adding milk, then again with it if that is how you enjoy coffee. Does the chocolate seem rounder? Does the fruit become easier to notice?

There is no correct answer. The point is to pay attention for a moment — and enjoy your cup.

We have also written about Sombra and the idea of a slower morning. This note introduces the roastery; that one follows a single bag.

Selected, not collected. A roastery with a point of view, and a few coffees with clear personalities.
