BREWRITUAL · MEET THE MAKER · MAKER NOTE NO.04

Girl Crush. Oh My Goth. The names are easy to remember. Turn to the coffee behind them and there’s something else worth knowing: Girls Who Grind Coffee sources all its beans from women producers.

The roastery is based in Wiltshire, in the South West of England. We stock several of its coffees at BrewRitual, and wanted to take a closer look at the business before getting into which bag to choose.

A little about how it began

Girls Who Grind Coffee started in 2017. Casey LaLonde’s route into the industry took her from Upstate New York to the UK, with a sociology degree and time working in a coffee cupping lab along the way. There, she learned to roast and taste coffee and helped with Q-Grader courses, which train people to assess coffee quality.

In the brand’s account of its beginnings, Casey talks about wanting to run her own business and work more closely with the women growing the coffee. That intention still shapes what the roastery buys.

What goes into buying the beans

There’s a useful detail in their sourcing notes: they aim to buy larger quantities from their producers, rather than choosing only a few prized small lots. Those larger orders matter to the grower’s income.

They find coffees through small importers, platforms that connect producers with roasters, and direct relationships. The route can vary; the aim is to keep working with producers over time.

They also describe growers as business partners and acknowledge that buyers have power over who gets an order and at what price. It’s a refreshingly specific explanation of what a coffee relationship involves.

Two bags to start with

Girl Crush · 250g whole bean · £10

This is the medium-roast option: a sweet, balanced espresso blend with a fuller body. If you make a flat white or cappuccino at home, it’s a straightforward place to start. It’s suited to drinking with milk.

Oh My Goth · 250g whole bean · £11

Prefer a darker roast? Start here. The current tasting notes are dark chocolate, caramel and praline, with a full body. It’s another option for espresso and milk drinks, so the main choice between these two is the roast style you enjoy.

Oh My Goth, the darker-roast option.

Both bags are whole bean, so you’ll need a grinder. Choose the roast that sounds closest to your usual cup, then read a little about the people who grew it while the machine warms up.
